How important is type 3 collagen?

As you explore different collagen supplements on the market, you will encounter different types of collagen. Collagen types 1, 2 and 3 are the most common, as these are the ones that are most present in our bodies. But what do these different types of collagen mean and do they do different things in your body? In this post, we will look at the benefits of the different types of collagen and outline why we chose type 1 marine collagen for Kollo.

A brief introduction to type 1, type 2 and type 3 collagen

The 3 main collagen types are as follows:

Type 1 collagen

This keeps skin elasticity and hydration high, helping minimise fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps with the structure of muscle, bones, tendons, teeth and even eyes. It may also help strengthen your hair and nails, and it is very abundant in marine collagen.

Type 2 collagen

Collagen type 2 is most abundant in your cartilage, which provides cushioning between bones in your joints. It is also present between your spinal discs and even in your eye sockets, offering protection and keeping bones and joints healthy.

Type 3 collagen

This is found in high concentrations in the intestines, blood vessels, muscles and uterus. It is often very complementary to type 1 collagen in helping with gut health and wound healing, and it can also be helpful in improving the structure of the skin.

Overall, collagen is the most abundant protein in your body – it makes up around 30% of the total protein molecules in your body. Your body synthesises collagen molecules on its own, but this process slows down as you age. Along with other factors, this can result in the breakdown of tissues that cause signs we associate with ageing – wrinkled, sagging skin and weaker joints. With collagen supplements and a few lifestyle modifications, you can replenish collagen and slow the breakdown of your existing collagen. But which collagen type should you focus on?

How important is type 3 collagen?

Type 3 collagen is actually the second most abundant collagen type in your body. Its presence is most important in the intestines, blood vessels and muscles, though it also plays a role in your skin. As such, the primary benefit you can get from increasing your type 3 collagen is greater health in your arteries and your gut. These are important because gut health is associated with a wide range of other health benefits while arterial health is important for keeping your risk of heart attack and stroke to a minimum.

What about type 2 collagen?

Type 2 collagen makes up most of the protein molecules in your cartilage. Cartilage is present in between bones so that they don’t run together harshly when you move. Everyone experiences wear and tear on their cartilage in one form or another, but very active people tend to get it the worst. People who are overweight for long periods of their lives also tend to experience issues with cartilage. When it wears away, we experience pain and stiffness in joints and it may increase our risk of developing osteoarthritis.

By replenishing your type 2 collagen, you can keep strength in the tissues of your cartilage. It may not be possible to restore lost cartilage, but whatever you do have can be kept in prime condition to function as effectively as possible. The sooner you start doing this, the better – by maintaining good health in your cartilage, you may lose less of it due to wear and tear as you get older.

So why does Kollo use type 1 collagen?

By far the most abundant collagen type in the human body, type 1 collagen is in the skin, eyes, tendons, bones and even teeth. It is very useful for maintaining great health in your bones, joints, muscles and more, but it is most famous for keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay. It also helps with skin hydration and elasticity and provides a strong, healthy base for your hair and nails. Essentially, it is very potent for keeping your body looking and feeling younger for longer.

The benefits of type 1 collagen overlap quite a lot with type 3 so it’s not uncommon to find supplements that contain both. But, in reality, any type of collagen you put into your body will be broken down into its component parts which are then used to create new collagen. Your body determines what types of collagen it produces so consuming lots of type 3 collagen will not necessarily lead to an increase in your own type 3 collagen.

When developing Kollo, we found that type 1 collagen is far more present in the human body than any other type. This leads to the theory that it will be the easiest type of collagen for the body to absorb, and studies into marine collagen appear to back that up. Our priority is to provide a collagen drink that packs a real punch, with collagen peptides that are easy to absorb and that will be absorbed in large quantities. So we settled on marine type 1 collagen to provide your body with all the amino acids it needs to synthesise new collagen of all types within the body.

So do I need to take type 3 collagen?

All the different types of collagen are important in your body if you want good health all round. Types 1 and 3 are the ones that are most apparent in your skin, so if your main goal is to look younger then you need to produce lots of them. But taking collagen peptides that come from type 3 collagen is unlikely to have any bearing on how much type 3 collagen your body produces.

The key is to just get as much collagen-boosting nutrition into your body as possible. A potent, high-quality, bioavailable source of collagen peptides combined with a balanced diet and some positive lifestyle changes is key. You need to supply your body with an abundance of:

  • Amino acids (from collagen peptides and other proteins)

  • B vitamins

  • Vitamin C

  • Copper

  • Zinc

  • Chlorophyll

  • Antioxidants

These things come from a wide range of foods including meats, dairy products, leafy greens, citrus fruits, other fruit and vegetables, seeds, nuts, pulses and beans. In addition to consuming these things, it is also advisable to get lots of exercise and remember to stretch afterwards, and engage in a good skincare routine, drink lots of water and sleep for 7-8 hours every night.

You also need to try and cut a few things out to protect your collagen and promote good synthesis of new collagen. Consider:

  • Reducing your sun exposure and always wearing sunscreen

  • Quitting smoking

  • Lowering your stress levels

  • Eating less refined carbohydrates and sugars

  • Drinking less alcohol

If you are able to make all these changes, you will be living a pro-collagen lifestyle that, over time, will have you looking and feeling younger for longer.
