Are there multivitamins with collagen and are they any good?

Many people take multivitamins as a supplement to ensure their body is getting the full range of nutrients it needs in the correct quantity. These nutrients are important for keeping the various functions of our bodies operating at optimum capacity, and there are lots of nutrients to include. Amino acids, vitamins A, B, C, D and E, antioxidants, fatty acids and more all play important roles in maintaining the health of our organs, muscles, bones, joints, bodily systems and more. But are there good multivitamins with collagen and, if there are, how likely are they to deliver the benefits you can get from the best collagen supplements?

Read on to explore this question and get the answers you need.

What are the most important ingredients for a multivitamin?

Generally speaking, it is best to try and get as many of the nutrients your body needs as possible from your diet. Of course, this is not easy to do, and many of us simply don’t have the time to devote to the careful planning and execution of a diet that delivers all the right nutrients. Vitamin deficiencies are linked to a number of chronic diseases and general health issues in everyday life and supplementation may help.

There are a few ingredients that should always be included in a multivitamin for it to be effective:

• Vitamin D: this helps with calcium absorption for bone health and is also important for a strong immune system. We can get vitamin D from sunlight as well as fatty fish, egg yolks and fortified foods. However, vitamin D deficiencies are alarmingly common, so supplementation is recommended.

• Magnesium: this is important for bone health and energy production, as well as reducing stress, promoting good sleep and a number of other benefits. It can come from foods like spinach, soybeans, brown rice and nuts, but a supplement can help ensure you get the right daily intake of it.

• Calcium: we need calcium for strong bones and teeth, and it mostly comes from dairy products, nuts, pulses and certain leafy greens like kale. If you don’t consume enough of these foods, you need calcium in your supplement.

• Zinc: this supports immune systems, promotes energy production and can reduce stress. It comes from various seeds, organ meats, brown rice and some seafood, but many of us don’t get enough of it in our diets. This is why daily supplementation can be helpful.

• Vitamin B12: our bodies need vitamin B12 for creating and sustaining energy in the body, as well as preserving the health of nerve and blood cells. It primarily comes from meat, so vegans and vegetarians are more prone to a deficiency. Getting it from a multivitamin is a good way to ensure you aren’t missing out on your daily allowance.

These are 5 of the most important ones, but there are many other vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that our bodies need to function at their optimal level.

Where does collagen come in?

Collagen is a protein that is abundant in the connective tissues of our bodies. This means our skin, tendons, ligaments and cartilage are largely made up of collagen, but it also has a substantial presence in our bones, muscles and the tissues that make up the digestive and arterial systems. In short, collagen is extremely important for healthy tissues in our bodies, but our bodies’ natural production of new collagen declines as we age.

The consequence of this is that we experience sagging, wrinkled skin, loss of bone density, declining muscle mass, stiff, sore joints and other signs that are frequently associated with ageing. The problem can be exacerbated by things like:

• Overexposure to sunlight
• Poor diet
• Smoking
• Drinking excessively
• Stress

Few people manage to consistently supply their bodies with all the nutrients necessary to fuel collagen production in the body. Thus, by taking a high-quality collagen supplement, you can supply your body with the amino acids it needs to stimulate collagen synthesis and fight back against those signs of ageing we listed earlier.

Collagen in supplements comes in the form of collagen peptides – small chains of amino acids derived by breaking down complete collagen molecules via a process called hydrolysis. These collagen molecules are extracted from the skin and scales of fish, or the bones and hides of cows or pigs, so it is real, natural collagen that you put into your body.

So are there multivitamins with collagen?

There are multivitamins on the market that contain collagen. Most multivitamins that people take come in the form of tablets, pills or capsules, though some people prefer multivitamin powders or drinks. With various different products, it’s natural that the ingredients and their quantities vary, but there is one issue that is fairly consistent amongst all of them: the collagen dosage is low.

In any supplement where collagen is not the primary focus, or in which there are many nutrients that take up some of the overall volume of the product, there is unlikely to be a high dosage of collagen. Many will have only 1 gram of collagen or less per tablet, scoop of serving – while there is no official recommended daily allowance (RDA) for collagen at present, research indicates that this simply isn’t enough.

Many studies suggest that to truly recap the benefits of collagen for our skin, bones, joints and beyond, we may need up to 12 grams of collagen per day. Taking just 1 gram or less each day is very unlikely to yield the benefits you want from the supplement.

What about collagen supplements with vitamins?

This may be a more effective solution with regards to getting the amount of collagen your body needs to reap the benefits. Kollo is one of the leading collagen supplements in the UK, offering 10 grams of premium-grade marine collagen in every daily sachet. It is offered in a highly bioavailable form of collagen peptides suspended in liquid to ensure maximum absorption once consumed. But that liquid formulation contains more than just collagen. We fortify it with:

• Vitamin C
• Vitamins B1, B5, B6 and B12
• L-lysine

These complementary nutrients are primarily there to boost the effect of the amino acids in the collagen peptides on stimulating natural collagen production in the body. But they also lead to a number of additional benefits in our bodies that are very important as well. This is, without a doubt, the best way to get the required amount of collagen into your body to experience the benefits to your:

• Skin
• Hair and nails
• Bones
• Joints
• Gut health
• Arterial health
• Muscle mass
• Energy levels

The added nutrients will also be beneficial, but it clearly isn’t going to provide all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients you need for a holistic approach to your health.

So what’s the answer?

One key point to go back to was said very early in this post: you need to eat well. A balanced diet with a wide range of food types will supply your body with a great number of the nutrients it needs most days. However, it is almost impossible to meet your body’s needs consistently through diet alone.

Supplementation is important, but you might want to focus on finding the best multivitamins and collagen supplements separately to get everything you need. We are confident that you won’t find a better source of collagen than taking Kollo, so the challenge will be finding a multivitamin that works for you. Look for something that contains the nutrients listed in the first section of this post, as well as:

• Iron
• Folate
• A complete vitamin complex

It’s important to be aware of the nutrients that are most important for you. For example, if you are an athlete, then you will want lots of protein and should be aiming to boost things like creatine. If you suffer with pain from arthritis, you may want to look for things that focus on that like glucosamine sulphate, while many people may need extra vitamin D or calcium to counteract deficiencies. Do the work to find the right multivitamin for you and take it in combination with Kollo to get maximum benefit for the health of your body.
